History & Philosophy

Altus Schools share the philosophy of putting students first in education. The schools focus on improving student achievement, creating prototypes for education reform, and improving the quality of life for students, their families, and their communities. Currently, Altus Schools include The Charter School of San Diego, Audeo Charter School, Mirus Secondary School, Laurel Preparatory Academy, Audeo Charter School II,  Grossmont Secondary School, and Sweetwater Secondary School.

The Charter School of San Diego was the first charter ever approved by the San Diego Unified School District.

Since 1994, Altus Schools have served over 42,000 students in 5 Southern California counties.

Altus Schools served over 7,959 students and awarded 1,034 high school diplomas to students during the 2015-2016 year.

Jeanette Perez, teacher at The Charter School of San Diego was awarded the 2017 Hart Vision Award for Teacher of the year by the California Charter Schools Association.

Altus comes from the Latin word meaning “high, deep, noble or profound.” This name embodies the academic commitment and values-driven connection of all Altus Schools. Every Altus School is dedicated to creating environments in which students are able to accomplish their most important goal – to learn.
