On Friday, January 13th 2017 at approximately 1500, Cadet Staff Sergeant Sagiao Saitupu was recognized by the 701st California Cadet Corps Battalion for placing First Place in the High School Division of the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation Essay Writing contest. C/SSG Saitupu, a 12th grade student from The Charter School of San Diego, submitted an essay addressing the USMC core values of Honor, Courage, Commitment and what they meant to her.
Essays were submitted from students attending public, private and home schools throughout San Diego and Imperial counties. They were first read by a panel of veterans and museum volunteers. Only essays that they marked as outstanding were forwarded to a professional panel of principals and teachers for rating and ranking.
C/SSG Saitupu, having placed First, was awarded a $300 check as well as a plaque for her achievements. The winning submission also qualifies the 701st BN for $400 to be used towards a field trip to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum; made available thanks to Major Glenn Ferguson (USMC-retired).
Congratulations, Cadet Staff Sergeant Saitupu, for your incredible accomplishment! Read her award-winning essay here.
