CSSD Student Artwork Displayed at Museum of Contemporary Art

CSSD students show off their identity art projects.Students at The Charter School of San Diego created art pieces that explore the idea of identity through an extended partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego. Students used self-reflection to create pieces that project how they view themselves and how others might perceive them. The students who attend The Charter School of San Diego come from various backgrounds and, though students come to school with the same purpose of gaining an education, each student is unique in their own way. The art pieces that have been created showcase each artist’s individuality.

Students met with their teacher on a weekly basis to discuss themes that shape identity such as race, gender, pop culture, community and personal experiences. As part of the project, monthly field trips to the Museum of Contemporary Arts at both the Downtown and La Jolla locations were conducted. The themes of identity were further investigated as students were able to converse about and interact with the art pieces within each art gallery. Students were inspired by these discussions and field trips and were able to create art pieces that are personal reflections of how they view themselves and the world around them.

Through this art experience, students were not only able to learn more about themselves, but they also gained a greater understanding of their peers. Though many of the pieces were done independently, students collaborated with each other on ideas for projects as well as on what types of mediums to use. As a result, students were able to build a sense of community where their individual experiences with the art became shared experiences. Each student had something real and meaningful to share in their art pieces and their hope is that those who view the pieces will also gain a sense of themselves by connecting with their art.

The student artwork resulting from this identity project will be displayed as part of an exhibit opening on Thursday, May 19th, 2016 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Downtown, 1100 Kettner Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92101. Please join us for the opening event from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on May 19th. Please mention you are with The Charter School of San Diego for free admission to the exhibit.
